Decatur’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Project
2011 MLK Jr. Service Project:
Homeowner Assistance Requests
Are you age 65 or older and on a fixed or lower income? Do you own and live in your home? Is your home within the city limits of Decatur? If you or someone you know can answer “yes” to these questions, you or the person you have in mind may qualify for help with home and yard maintenance and repairs through the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project.
The next service project – the ninth annual – will take place Saturday-Monday, Jan. 15-17, 2011. Home and yard maintenance assistance is available free of charge to those who qualify. The project is sponsored by the Decatur Preservation Alliance in partnership with the City of Decatur.
Now is the time to apply for assistance. Applications are taken by telephone and the deadline is Monday, May 31. If you think you or someone you know might be eligible, contact Susan Cobleigh, 404-371-4444; susan@decaturpreservationalliance.org.
2010 Decatur MLK Jr. Service Project Biggest Success Yet
Rain did not stop the 1,180 volunteers who turned out to do home repairs and yard work for senior citizens during the eighth annual Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project weekend. Volunteers repaired 13 homes, did yard work on 50 senior citizens’ homes, and also did yard work for people with disabilities who live near the Solarium in Oakhurst.
Volunteers filled up approximately 2,500 yard waste bags along with many more piles of brush. Repairs included designing and building a handicap ramp; alleviating moisture infiltration and repairing damage; rebuilding steps, handrails and landings to allow back door access; installing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors; plumbing and electrical repairs using skilled tradespeople; repairing and replacing caulking; replacing old light bulbs with new energy efficient ones; repairing and replacing doors and windows, door and window hardware and locks; air-sealing attics in preparation for R-30 cellulose insulation at eight homes; weatherstripping doors; cutting in gable vents for attic ventilation; insulating ductwork and air handlers; and insulating water pipes for energy efficiency and freeze protection.
The MLK Jr. service project is sponsored by the Decatur Preservation Alliance in partnership with the City of Decatur and with the assistance of a variety of nonprofit organizations, businesses, skilled tradespeople, places of worship, and other organizations.
