Decatur Receives Grant for Bicycle Safety Education

Decatur has received a $16,400 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to conduct educational classes on bicycle safety and run a “Caught in the Act” program for bicycle riders 18 and under.

The goal of the program is to reduce crashes by encouraging children to follow traffic laws and wear helmets. The grant covers three safety classes through the Decatur Recreation Department, a bicycle rodeo in May, and the distribution of prizes when police officers “catch” bicyclists following the proper traffic laws and wearing their helmets.

For more information email Amanda Thompson.
